Self-Esteem

How to Build Self-Esteem

  • by

A great way to build self-esteem is to do something for someone else.

Give the gift of your skills! Whether this be via volunteering, or lending a hand to a neighbour or friend, helping others can be incredibly worthwhile. This can also highlight to yourself that you have skills and qualities that are of value. Feeling appreciated can also be very rewarding, and again improve your self-esteem and sense of self-worth.

Master a Skill

Ever wanted to learn a new language? Or try your hand at an instrument? Perhaps you would love to become one of those people who runs in their spare time?

Mastering a new skill can be a great way to improve self-esteem. Having the courage to take the first step to try for the first time can be incredibly rewarding, and reassuring. Continuing to show up and honing your new skill can serve as a reminder of your many abilities, and give you reason to feel proud of yourself.

Appearance

Dressing up can help you to improve your self-esteem.

Taking the time to tend to your appearance to make you look your best, can help you to feel your best too. Looking good can help you to feel proud in your appearance, and proud of your efforts and your attempt to do something for yourself. Self-care is a form of self-respect, and whilst we are not saying that looks are everything, you deserve to feel proud of your appearance and the effort that you put into it.

Set Goals

Improve your self-esteem by re-defining what “success” means to you.

Shape your ideas of what success are by the things that you have already achieved. Rather than just focusing on monetary or career goals, consider personal achievements?

Have you successfully overcome adversity? Have you been successful in building a friendship where you feel truly valued? Have you had the courage to walk away from a relationship that didn’t fulfil you, or worse, caused you harm?

Changing your ideas of success in order to align with all that you have already achieved can help you to feel accomplished, fulfilled, and proud. Having evidence of your successes to hand could make you feel capable, which in turn will improve your self-esteem.
