What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid is an important skill that you should learn, which will help you assist colleagues, friends and family during a time of crisis. Mental Health First Aid training will provide you with an understanding of the UK legislation that supports mental illness, and the impact that such legislation has in supporting individuals with mental illness both in life and in work.

Our MHFA course will demonstrate why prevention is essential, and you will learn strategies to promote mental well-being and avoid mental health crises. We explore the importance of such legislation, and the consequences of not following UK legislation in relation to mental illness.

On our Mental Health First Aid training course, we will teach you how to assess the environment for immediate danger to the individual, self and others during a mental health emergency, and when and how to access emergency services. We will teach you how to ensure that the dignity of the individual experiencing mental health emergency remains paramount, and why it is important to gain consent before intervention. We will also teach you the skills to account for an individual’s preferences and wishes when intervening in a mental health emergency.

You will learn to identify situations where mental health related incidents need reporting and/or recording, and the circumstances whereby an individual should be encouraged to contact their GP. We will teach you where to search for support for people experiencing mental health conditions, and where to find support for their carers.

We will help you to better understand why individuals may be reluctant to disclose a mental health diagnosis during a mental health emergency. Finally, will learn to identify circumstances whereby where intervention is not the best course of action, when adjustments need to be made instead to the environment.

We used PMAC to get 12 staff members trained up in Mental Health First Aid. The trainer was professional and knowledgeable. The staff found it very useful.
